Dell PowerEdge Questions

Models, specs, ordering, support

Answers to the most common questions about Dell PowerEdge rack servers from VRLA Tech. Still have questions? Talk to our engineers.

What Dell PowerEdge rack server models does VRLA Tech configure?

VRLA Tech configures current-generation Dell PowerEdge rack servers including the 17th generation R670, R770 (Intel Xeon 6), and R7725 (AMD EPYC 9005 Turin), as well as the 16th generation R760xa for GPU-dense deployments. We source new Dell chassis and configure them with workload-specific CPU, memory, storage, networking, and GPU specifications. 18th generation models with AMD EPYC Venice processors will be available in H2 2026.

What is the difference between 17th generation and 16th generation?

17th generation (R670, R770, R7725) features Intel Xeon 6 or AMD EPYC 9005 Turin, DDR5 ECC RDIMM, PCIe Gen 5, iDRAC10, and CXL 2.0. 16th generation (R660, R760, R760xa) uses Intel Xeon 4th/5th gen or AMD EPYC Genoa. VRLA Tech in Los Angeles configures, burn-in tests, and supports both generations. Contact our engineers for a quote.

What is the difference between the R770 and R670?

The R770 is a 2U dual-socket server with up to 40 E3.S drives, more PCIe expansion, and support for double-wide GPUs. The R670 is a 1U dual-socket server for compute density and scale-out. Both use Intel Xeon 6 with DDR5 ECC RDIMM and PCIe Gen 5.

Should I choose Intel Xeon 6 or AMD EPYC?

Intel Xeon 6 (R670, R770) offers P-core/E-core variants, CXL 2.0, and strong single-thread performance. AMD EPYC 9005 Turin (R7725) delivers up to 192 cores, more PCIe Gen 5 lanes, and higher memory bandwidth. For multi-GPU AI and HPC, EPYC's I/O advantage is significant. For Intel ISA features like AMX, Xeon 6 is the right choice.

Does VRLA Tech configure Dell servers with NVIDIA GPUs?

Yes. We configure Dell PowerEdge servers with NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000, H200 NVL, H100, and L40S. The R770 supports up to 2 double-wide GPUs. The R760xa supports up to 4 double-wide GPUs. Every GPU configuration is validated, burn-in tested, and backed by a 3-year parts warranty and lifetime US-based engineer support.

Which Dell server is best for AI inference?

The Dell PowerEdge R770 is the strongest current-gen choice for AI inference with up to 2 double-wide GPUs and 8 TB DDR5 ECC RDIMM. For maximum GPU density, the 16th gen R760xa supports up to 4 double-wide GPUs. Use our AI ROI calculator to estimate your deployment.

Are Dell PowerEdge 18th generation servers available yet?

18th gen with AMD EPYC Venice and NVIDIA Rubin was announced at Dell Technologies World and ships H2 2026. Models include R9815, R9825, and liquid-cooled M9825. VRLA Tech will configure and support them when available. Contact us about timeline.

Can I get a VRLA Tech custom server instead of Dell?

Yes. VRLA Tech builds custom rack servers using the same Intel Xeon 6, AMD EPYC 9005, NVIDIA GPUs, and DDR5 ECC RDIMM as Dell PowerEdge — without the OEM premium. If procurement doesn't require Dell, our custom servers deliver identical performance at lower cost. Explore VRLA Tech servers.

Can I get a quote on a custom-configured Dell server?

Yes. Contact VRLA Tech with your workload, software stack, and performance targets. Quotes come back within one business day. We've configured Dell servers for enterprise, government, research, and defense customers since 2016.
